Is at the Edinburgh Festival where Teresa performs the character of Carmen for the first time in August 1977, after 20 years training to perform it. But, to do so, Teresa requires the best: a scene director that understands, helps, and stimulates the singers (Piero Faggioni), a scene director who she already had worked with in her biggest successes (Claudio Abbado) and a suitable room, the King’s Theatre in Edinburgh.
There, Berganza successes and offers the total recreation of a character that, from very long time ago, had been denatured at the majority of the lyrical theatres around the world. Teresa studies conscientiously the Merimée piece and, in her forties, she draws the character with absolute mastery.
Following Edinburg, it would be San Francisco, Paris, Hamburg… All of them with the same success.
